Lex Thompson is a member of the Fairfield High School Class of 2020 who can’t wait to graduate and attend Sam Houston State University, where he intends to earn a degree in Criminal Justice.

After graduating from SHSU, Thompson plans to attend the Texas Game Warden Academy to become a game warden.

“I think the most influential person in my life is John Thorne,” Thompson said. “He is one of our local game wardens and working with him has steered me to my path in life.”

Thompson attended Kindergarten through 12th grade at Fairfield Independent School District, and is an honor graduate for the FHS class of 2020. At FHS, he played football for four years, competed in powerlifting for four years, and was in the band for three years. He was also a member of FFA, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Beta Club, and Interact Club.

One of Thompson’s honors was qualifying for the Regional powerlifting meet his junior year. In football, he was named as an Honorable Mention on the All-District team at Nose Guard.

This year, he served as the Fairfield FFA President, as well as an Area 8 FFA Officer. As a junior, he was the Vice-President for the Fairfield FFA and served as a District FFA Officer. Thompson served as the Fairfield FFA Reporter his sophomore year.

In FFA, he earned his Star Greenhand Award his freshman year, his Star Chapter Farmer Award his sophomore year, and his Lone Star Degree his junior year.

Thompson has been showing hogs at the Freestone County Fair since the third grade. In high school, he has also competed in ag mechanic competitions. He has shown at major shows including San Antonio and Houston as well.

“My favorite high school memories are the ag mechanic competitions,” Thompson said.

“Overall, these competitions were just fun, all day events. We would get up early and stay at the barn all day, eat well, and get to sleep in a hotel. I made many memories at these competitions that I will never forget.”

One planned competition in Houston was forced into cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“COVID-19 put an early end to my senior year, but I got to start working more as a welder at Ceta,” Thompson said. “The one thing that I did miss my senior year was showing a stock trailer that we made at the Houston Livestock Show.”

Outside of school, Thompson is a member of the Fairfield Young Farmers and the Freestone County Game Management Association.

Lex’s hobbies include hunting, fishing, and being at the lake.

“My advice to underclassmen is to not wait until the last minute to try to figure out what you want to do,” Thompson said.

“Try to have a plan and know what direction you want to go.”

Lex’s proud parents are Tracy and Amanda Thompson.
