Eagles defeat Teague, take second

The Fairfield Eagles defeated the Teague Lions 1-0 in their final district game on Tuesday, April 23, to finish second place in district play behind Franklin. Groesbeck took the third place seed as Mexia grabbed the fourth place seed. The Eagles enter the playoffs with an overall record of 18-8 and a district record of 9-5.

The season came to an end for the Fairfield Lady Eagles on Saturday, April 27, with a 15-0 loss to the Lexington Lady Eagles at Madisonville High School. The Lady Eagles finish the season with an overall record of 15-13.

Last week, I was in the turkey woods well before daylight. The day promised to be perfect for a spring turkey hunt, calm winds that would allow the sound of my plaintive hen yelps to carry back into the woods where I knew several turkeys had roosted.

“We have received multiple calls about wild turkeys being spotted in the county. TPWD released turkeys in our area in the recent past to establish a population here. It seems like it is working. You may come across some turkeys like these in the photo that was taken in Freestone County. You may notice that some of these turkeys don’t seem skittish right now and that is because of the rut. There was a time back when I was in my 20s and 30s that I thought I would be hanging up my hunting and fishing gear when I reached those magic ‘golden years’. I used to dread turning 60 and then 70 because I truly thought I would be on the front porch in a rocking chair reminiscing about all the great times I had in the outdoors as a young man.
