The Lady Eagles claimed the Region III - 3A title on Tuesday night with a 65-29 victory over the Lexington Lady Eagles at Bryan High School. The win moves Fairfield to 26-2 on the season and sends them to the Final Four.
“The girls worked really hard tonight against Lexington. We had to focus on defending some great players from Lexington,” Coach Sally Whitaker said after the game. “Holding a team to 29 points in a regional final is an amazing team accomplishment.”
The Lady Eagles will now match-up with the Bishop Badgers in the State Semi-Finals this weekend at a neutral location. Details on the State Semi-Finals were not available as of press time.
In the Regional Finals, Lexington made the first basket of the night. Breyunna Dowell hit a basket for Fairfield to tie the game at two. Lexington hit another basket to go up 4-2 and Fairfield called a timeout.
McKinna Brackens made her first basket of the night to notch the game at four. Lexington answered with another basket to take their last lead of the game, 6-4. M. Brackens tied the game at six after Fairfield caused a turnover.
Dowell hit three baskets in a row for the Lady Eagles to give Fairfield a 12-6 lead. Lexington called a timeout with 2:28 left in the first quarter. M. Brackens hit two more baskets for the Lady Eagles and Lexington made two more shots as Fairfield took a 16-10 lead after the first quarter of play.
The Lady Eagles put up 22 points on the board in the second quarter and held Lexington to just five points to take a 38-15 lead in at halftime. Jarahle Daniels, Shadasia Brackens, and M. Brackens all hit a three-pointer for Fairfield in the second quarter.
Fairfield came out in the third quarter and outscored Lexington 13-8 to extend their lead to 51-23 going into the final quarter of play. The Lady Eagles put up 14 more points on the board and held Lexington to five points in the fourth quarter to become the Region III - 3A Champions with a thirty-six point victory, 65-29.
Breyunna Dowell led the way for the Lady Eagles with 23 points. McKinna Brackens added 21 points, Shadasia Brackens 13 points, Jarahle Daniels 7 points, and Te’Yalla Simpson 1 point.
