HERTHA WHEAT TAYLOR

The Angelic Hosts came for Mrs. Hertha Ann Wheat Taylor on January 1, 2020 in the Palestine Regional Hospital among loving family and devoted friends. Viewing will be held Jan. 10 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Moore’s Angelic Funeral Chapel. Funeral Services will be held Jan. 11 at 11 a.m. in the Brown Chapel AME Church, FM 489, Oakwood, TX. Interment will be in the Brown Chapel Cemetery.

Hertha Ann Wheat was born to the late Edwin E. And Hertha Leola Jones Wheat in the summer of 1933 in Kerrville, TX. Since her parents were educators, receiving her higher education was non-negotiable.

Hertha graduated from Butler High School. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Paul Quinn College after which she received a Master of Education from Texas southern University in Houston. She did further studies at the University of Texas in Austin.

Hertha valued education and loved to teach as much as she loved to learn. Her former principal spoke of her outstanding skills with her students and the legacy she left upon their minds and hearts which began in her community school, Trahin Elementary School and ending at Teague I.S.D.

Hertha was an active member of Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church where she served faithfully as church secretary, steward, stewardess and choir member. She was a life member of the NAACP, Texas State Teacher’s Association, and a member of the Freestone County Retired Teachers Association.

She received a Senate Proclamation from the Texas Senate and an Outstanding Achievement Award from The Special Acts of Service in Education. And Hertha received a certificate of Achievement from President Barack Obama for reaching her 80th birthday.

Hertha passed away on January 1, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, David Byars and husband, Bobby Taylor.

She is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Lawton, many cousins, church family and friends.
