Despite a sparkling regular season in which the team picked up over 20 victories, with just one loss in district play, the Fairfield Lady Eagles' 2020 volleyball campaign came to an end Thursday night.

In a close four-set contest, the Lady Eagles were defeated by Rockdale in front of a sizable attendance at Waco Robinson High School.

The beginning of the match set the tone right away, as Rockdale was not looking to break at the presence of one of 3A's top teams. Taking an early point advantage in the first set were the Lady Tigers, who continually set the ball in the middle of the Lady Eagles' defense. Down 24-19 nearing the end of the set, the Lady Eagles attempted a rally, scoring three straight points. The comeback was to no avail, as Rockdale took the first set, 25-22.

Set two was another back-and-forth affair, with the Lady Eagles struggling to mount consistent scoring against the opposition. After tying the set at nine apiece, and later at 13-13, the Lady Eagles were unable to fully take the lead. The team was able to get within two points once more, a 22-20 deficit, but gave up three straight points to the Lady Tigers.

Now down two sets to none, the Lady Eagles came out focused for the team's lone set victory of the night. The momentum of the set was on Fairfield's side immediately, jumping out to a 5-1 advantage and holding off the Rockdale charges for a 25-21 set victory.

The fourth set would spell doom for the Lady Eagles' season, but not without a fight. In an intense set that featured five lead changes, the Lady Eagles were fending off their opposition after taking a 4-3 lead early. The team was able to hold the advantage until a late Rockdale run sealed the night for the Lady Tigers. Tied at 22, the Lady Eagles allowed three straight points to the opponent once more, ending the 2020 campaign with a 25-22 set loss.

Rockdale will now advance in the 3A Regions 3 & 4 bracket to face the winner of Troy and Malakoff.
