An end to one of the most unique years in Fairfield High School history came to a close May 29 with a graduation ceremony at Eagle Stadium.

Like almost all events in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony was held with special guidelines, keeping social distancing in mind.

Graduates were separated by at least six feet via seating on the football field. Prior to entering the stadium, both graduates and guests were examined by staff via questioning for any worsening symptoms related to COVID-19.

For guests, hand sanitizing and washing stations were available at the stadium.

Graduates walked along the Eagle Stadium track to their designated seats to begin the proceedings, followed by an invocation by class of 2020 member David Thomas.

“Bless the teachers, administration and staff...as we take our next steps, I pray the class of 2020 would come to know that Your plans are for our good, and You have given us a future hope,” Thomas said.

FHS Principal Sonya Gibson spoke next, praising the class for their accomplishments throughout the years.

“They are intelligent, articulate, highly motivated, and extremely competitive,” Gibson said.

Gibson noted that the time spent at FHS will make a lasting impact, wherever the class of 2020 lands.

“Tonight marks the last time these 127 students will be together,” she said. “After this ceremony, they will go on their separate paths, but they will always hold special feelings for Fairfield High School.”

Gibson also recgonized administration members within Fairfield Independent School District (FISD), including Superintendent Dr. Jason Adams.

Valedictorian Conner Jackson and Salutatorian Devin Lee Johnson both prepared speeches as well, with the top two graduates addressing their fellow classmates’ past, present and futures.

“Don’t look back on your failures and regret, my friends, look forward and smile,” Jackson said to close his speech.

Johnson echoed the inspirational statements.

“We are battle-tested, resolved, and determined to prove that no virus nor obstacle can or will stop us from achieving greatness,” he said.

Dr. Adams followed by accepting the class of 2020, followed by a ceremonial turning of graduates’ cap tassles.

Staying within guidelines, graduates were able to walk up to the stage on the north end of the stadium to receive their diplomas.
