An 18-wheeler refrigerated tractor truck, filled with 50,000 pounds of chicken, traveling southbound on I-45 early Thursday, March 17, at about 10 a.m. caught fire. The incident occurred near roadside marker 186 between Fairfield and Buffalo.

No one was injured nor were there any other vehicles involved, according to Texas Department of Public Safety Officer Ryan Howard in Waco. The driver noticed something was not quite right with the trailer en route to the Houston area.

He pulled the vehicle to the side of the road and discovered the fire which was extinguished, said Howard. Due to the proximity of the vehicle on the side of the road, southbound traffic was brought to a complete stop momentarily in the far right lane. Traffic was backed up for miles and many vehicles circumvented the site by rerouting through Fairfield. As of 3 p.m. traffic was at a standstill on parts of Interstate 45.

The brand name of the company truck was not reported. There was no indication reported of what caused the fire.
